After you have found a domain name you can secure it by following the on-screen directions.
Picking a good domain name is very important. It says who you are and what you do. A domain name is a web site address or ‘URL’, an example of this would be, www.yoursite.com. There are a few general rules to follow when you are trying to choose your domain name.
Check Domain Availability
How To Pick a Great Domain Name
- The shorter a name, the better. It’s easier to remember and recognize.
- Don’t use hyphens. Many people use hyphens in their domain names to separate words. This is generally not a good idea. For example, if someone sees your domain name on a piece of paper or hears about it by word of mouth and later goes to their computer to visit your web site, they more than likely will not remember your hyphens and may even type in your competitors web site.
- .com, .net, .org, or .us? It is strongly recommended that you get a ‘.com’ extension for your web site. It is the format that most web sites use on the Internet today. If a competitor has the .com that you want and the .net is available, DO NOT get it. Customers can easy forget the extension at the end of your domain and go straight to your competitor’s web site. Let’s say your competitor has ‘company.com’, and you choose ‘company.net’ as your domain name. When someone goes into their web browser and simply types in ‘company’ in their web browser address bar without the extension, the web browser will try to find the extension for you. It always starts with the ‘.com’, then ‘.net’ and so on.
- What does the domain name say about your business? It is important to get a domain name that is related to what you do. For example you should not get ‘fastcars.com’ if you want to sell pet supplies. Having a domain name that gives relevance to who you are and what you do can also help get you higher ranking with search engines and also makes it much easy for potential customers to remember how to find you on the Internet.
